I. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
HARDWARE: LightSail can be installed on iPad 2 or newer, including iPad Mini. LightSail does not work on first generation iPads, as they cannot update past iOS 5.
OPERATING SYSTEM: LightSail requires iOS 9 or newer.
NETWORK: To achieve the most desirable book download speed, we recommend an Internet connection of 15Mbps or faster. During setup, a technical manager will assist the school’s tech contact in testing whether content can be downloaded successfully over school Wi-Fi. Modifications to school or district firewall or filtering software may be necessary.
II. SETUP PROCESS
LightSail is available as a free download via the Apple App Store. An Apple ID is required for access. While there are many methods for deploying LightSail across your devices, the two most common scenarios are:
SHARED DEVICE MODEL, <10 DEVICES: On each individual iPad, sign into the App Store using your Apple ID. Search for “LightSail” and tap “GET” next to the LightSail Education search result. Be sure to enable automatic updates, located under Settings > iTunes & App Store > Automatic Downloads – Updates.
SHARED DEVICE MODEL, >10 DEVICES: Download LightSail using iTunes on a Mac computer running the latest version of OS X. Download Apple Configurator, a free application available on the Mac App Store. Apple Configurator can be used to install LightSail and configure settings across multiple iPads simultaneously. A sync-capable storage cart is recommended. Detailed Apple Configurator instructions can be found in the LightSail Learning Community at http://www.lightsailed.com. Login details will be provided during setup.
III. BEST PRACTICES
- Label, number, and assign devices to specific students. Not only does this encourage accountability regarding the care and condition of the devices, it simplifies the tracking and troubleshooting of technical issues.
- Enable iPad restrictions to limit distractions, prevent unnecessary modifications, and filter inappropriate content.
